Not rhetorically either, the little Nanos are literally catching fire. Three Tata Nanos have caught fire, reportedly, because of a short circuit in a steering column switch. As a result, the world’s cheapest car is being recalled and current showroom models are being audited.

To pretty much everyone’s surprise, the Tata Nano, the $1,000 Indian car that looks like an iMiev with four doors and even tinier tires, has passed European crash testing. Tata wants to get the little Nano onto European roads before 2012 and appears to be well on the way towards that goal.

Tata is the Indian company that bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. They’re one of India’s premier auto makers, with exports going all over Europe, the Americas, and Asia. At the recent Bologna Motor Show, they revealed the latest incarnation of the Indica.
