Wednesday’s 35mpg Fuel Economy Standards Debunked

In a widely publicized and loudly proclaimed press conference on Wednesday, President Obama and leaders from the environmental, automotive, and governmental sectors came together in the Rose Garden. The universal proclamation from the event was that a new agreement of epic proportions regarding automotive efficiency standards in the U.S. had been reached. Amazingly, both environmentalists and the automotive industry both wholeheartedly agreed with the proposal to raise fuel standards.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Funding Slashed From New DOE/Obama Budget

The much-touted “green” President, Obama, has OK’d a slash in the Department of Energy’s research funding budget for 2010. In the typical short-sightedness of government types, DoE Secretary Chu said that because “these vehicles are 10 to 20 years away,” they aren’t as imperative as battery electric technology.

More Bailouts for the Big 3 in Detroit

The Obama Administration plans to send another $285 million in funding to Detroit to purchase 17,600 new vehicles from the Big 3 before June 1st. The loose requirements for these “green” vehicles is that they manage to get at least 10% improvements in overall fuel efficiency from their counterparts.

The Electric Car Stimulus Plan

Obama’s “stimulus” package (I’ll try not to get political here) includes some pretty decent tax breaks for purchasing alternative-fueled vehicles. In the big picture, the credits were originally set for a total of 250,000 vehicles, but have now expanded to 200,000 vehicles PER MANUFACTURER. That’s a big jump and one that could pump up vehicle sales.
