Hymotion Announces Foreign Affairs Auto As Official PHEV Kit Installer

A123 Systems developed the Hymotion L5 plug-in conversion kit to convert a Prius (2nd generation) into a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Foreign Affairs Auto of West Palm Beach, Florida has been announced as an official installer of the kits–the 12th shop to gain that recognition from A123.

Chrysler’s New Electric Minivan for the US Post Office

Chrysler unveiled the first four of an eventual 250 battery-powered electric minivans for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The vans are based on the automaker’s Town & Country EV that was shown off late last year in LA. Because they are meant for Post Office duty routes (which are relatively short range), they are being built without the accompanying range-extending motor, so they’ll be all-electric rather than plug-in hybrids.

Michigan Gives $543.5 Million in Tax Credits to Battery Makers

Four battery makers–Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions, KD Advanced Battery Group, A123Systems, and LG Chem-Compact Power–are getting a combined total of $543.5 million in tax credits. Between them, the companies are planning to build $1.7 billion in lithium-ion manufacturing facilities in Michigan.

SIXTY-NINE Million in Funding for A123 Systems
A123Systems has announced a round of funding from General Electric and others totaling $69 million. The money will be used to expand existing facilities in Massachusetts and Michigan and to build a new facility in Michigan.
Some of the proceeds will also be used to develop applications for the smart grid–namely utility-scale storage, which A123 has been working on for some time.
Chrysler and GM Pick Battery Suppliers

In announcements that surprised no one, both Chrysler and General Motors have announced their battery suppliers for plugins and electrics. One announcement was made in the usual on-screen handshake and press release and the other was made amidst heavy fanfare and money-wasting jubilee. One guess as to which was which.

Battery Bailout: A123, Ener1 Vie For Federal Dollars

Two manufacturers of lithium-ion battery technology here in the U.S. have applied for federal loans through a Department of Energy program.
