A voluntary recall has been issued by Zero Motorcycles, through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, for the Zero X and Zero MX model year 2009 machines, which affects about 200 units. The recall was issued after Zero became aware of a problem with throttles sticking, leaving the motorcycles in the open position (ON or moving).
When the units are in “Easy” (aka “0-25 Mode”), this can cause the bike to accelerate as soon as it’s turned on, resulting in some obvious problems for the rider.
The recall is based on only 3 reports of the problem, but Zero is taking it seriously and has issued a voluntary recall through the CPSC to quickly remedy the situation before it becomes a serious hazard.
Zero is replacing the throttles and safety switches free of charge to fix the problem.
I think this is upstanding behavior on Zero’s part and shows that, even as a young company, they are concerned more about the quality of their products than about any negative PR that might come from them.
