EEStor Wonder Battery to Get UL Tested

There’s been a lot of hype and a lot of skepticism over the EEStor battery and superconductor, known as the EESU. Electric car company Zenn Motors seems to be banking their entire future on it while EEStor themselves have been very close to the vest about their research and development and any prototypes they may or may not have produced thus far.
Well, it’s getting close to go-time for them, with their announced plan to have it ready for going into Zenn vehicles sometime late this or early next year. They’ve promised to deliver working test models of the EESU in the fourth quarter.
Part of that means certification.
We’ve been following the EEStor saga as it unfolds and are now excited to see that it’s going to go to a trusted certifier, Underwriters Laboratories. Of course, this doesn’t mean anything more than proving that EEStor has at least produced or will be soon producing prototypes.
UL, for their part, is being quiet about it, but they have been developing electric car battery testing and certification standards for some time. The problem is that they won’t be necessarily verifying EEStor’s claims for the EESU, just that it won’t explode on impact, start fires when used, or electrocute someone who’s attempting to charge the unit.
So in the end, while it’s interesting news, it’s no proof that EEStor is delivering on their claims. We remain optimistic, however, as it’s doubtful that Zenn and others would put so much into this if there weren’t at least a little bit of something there.
Speaking of Zenn, they have announced a new business model and will soon be out of the electric vehicle production racket. In a press release on September 25, Zenn announced that they would be foregoing EV production in favor of concentrating on selling drive trains (the ZENNergy drive) to other car manufacturers instead.
