The Dutch Nuon Solar Team from Delft University has taken the trophy at the World Solar Challenge four times in a row now. They’ve unveiled the car that they think will make it five in a row - the Nuna 5.
The Nuna 5 expands on the team’s past experience and technology. Coming in at just under sixteen feet in length and 3 feet in height, the Nuna 5 uses the same solar technology as last year’s Nuna 4 (gallium-arsenide PV cells) and a small (the actual size is undisclosed) li-ion polymer battery for energy storage and speed boosting capability.
The largest improvements in this year’s design for the Nuna are it’s much lighter weight, losing about 66 pounds after a serious diet in body tech and parts reductions. The car now weighs 352 pounds (curb) and sports new hub-mounted motors that are more efficient than last year.
Of course, the team faces stiff competition from at least 50 teams this year, including the MIT team’s Eleanor.
We look forward to the race in October!
