Mitsubishi launched the series production of the iMiEV on June 5 and along with it came pictures of the actual production model for the little car. The first batch of cars are to be leased to fleets in July (commercial and governmental) and consumer vehicles won’t be available until next year, and then only in Japan.

It appears that Mitsubishi is hoping to reduce costs by selling commercial models first, so they can iron out the production details and begin ramping up unit quantities. Right now, the iMiEV has a price tag of about $45,500, before taxes and incentives. In Japan, after incentives, this comes down to about $31,000.

That’s still pretty steep for a subcompact, but it’s probably as good as it can get for a full-featured EV right now. Hopefully, after some production has gotten underway, costs will drop and the price will go with it.
