While Tesla might have been the first to get into the news for their electric car’s recall, ZAP Motors came in right after them. The Tesla Roadster’s problem was with a Lotus-made rear hub. For Zap, the issue is brakes.
While the Zap Xebra’s brakes passed an independent test for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulations, a follow-up audit by the NHTSA found them inadequate.
The issue isn’t with brake failures themselves (which aren’t happening), but with the inability of the braking system to stop the 3-wheeled Xebra inside of a required distance. So Zap is now awaiting approval on upgrades/changes to the Xebra’s braking system in order to comply, at which time a recall will be issued and models currently on the street will be upgraded.
