Boston-Power, based in Westborough, Massachusetts, has announced that they will be building a 455,000 square foot facility in Auburn, Mass. The new facility will be a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery making manufacturing plant. A federal stimulus of $100 million will be used to build the new plant in addition to $9 million from Massachusetts.
One of the technologies to be built at the new plant will be the Swing, a new eco-certified plug-in hybrid and battery electric power storage system. So far, the company hasn’t released a lot of information on the new battery, but those are promised in the next few weeks after independent testing has been completed.
Boston-Power is also the provider of the new Enviro Series of batteries being used by Hewlett Packard Computers. Those are laptop-specific batteries from Boston-Power’s Sonata series.
This new plant will bring not only li-ion battery building to America, but it will augment Boston-Power’s already robust Chinese manufacturing. This new warehouse in Mass will bring about 600 new jobs to the area at the plant itself, plus an estimated 2,000 more through supply chain vendors.
“Our goal is to make Massachusetts a manufacturing hub for the advanced batteries that will power the nation’s clean energy future, and Boston-Power’s plan to create this facility in Auburn is a big step toward that goal,” says Mass. governor Deval Patrick.
Great news for the battery industry, especially for electric vehicles made in North America.
