Ben Gulak, a freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has invented and built an electric motorcycle with only one wheel. The 19-year-old was featured on the cover of Popular Science and given a spot on their 10 top inventions of the year.
Gulak calls the really cool orange machine The Uno. After a family trip to China, where he saw the dense smog that covers Beijing and the blanket of motorcycles and scooters, he decided to do something about it. He wanted an eco-friendly way to travel that replaced those motorbikes and scooters.
The MIT freshman lives in Toronto, Canada and upon his return home immediately began work to design this new machine. The early iterations of the Uno were rough. He used conventional motorcycle parts and worked out the stabilization issues with a friend and robotics engineer, Trevor Blackwell.
The work was done in Gulak’s machine shop, which he inherited from his grandfather. The final product is a very sleek, unique, and fun-looking ride.
