Tesla has just announced that they are recalling 75% of the Roadsters they’ve put on the road so far for a safety issue involving the rear hub. To Tesla’s credit, the recall is with a factory flaw from Lotus, who makes the Roadster’s body, and not Tesla’s drivetrain.
The recall affects 345 Roadsters made between March of 2008 and April 22 this year. In keeping with the higher-end service that goes along with a Roadster, Tesla will be sending technicians, on appointment, to the homes or workplaces of their customers to do the repairs.
In the recall notice from the NHTSA at safecar.gov, the problem lies with the rear hub flange bolts being under-torqued from the factory. This could lead to loosening bolts and a loose hub, which would cause the driver to lose control of the car. The first sign of a problem is a rubbing noise as the bolts loosen and the hub begins to wobble.

Current Tesla owners can call Tesla Motors’ customer service hot line at 877-888-3752 for more information.
