A Closer Look At The 2009 VoltRider Electric Bike

When you look at the VoltRider’s marketing materials, the first thing you see is some cheesy comments about “E-grins.” Then you notice that “E-grins” is actually trademarked. They even claim to have gotten the term put into Wikipedia. Now I remember why I never cite Wikipedia as a source.
The VoltRider is an entry-level electric bike and, honestly, isn’t much different from similar models from other companies. In fact, it’s a little expensive for what you’re getting, in my opinion. It retails for $1,495 and only has a 180W motor for that.
It’s a basic step-through aluminum frame, which is popular amongst the “touring” style e-bikes for its easy mount and universal men or women’s use. The range is 20 miles on pure power and 40 miles pedal-assisted with a max speed of 16mph without your pedaling. It uses Shimano parts with standard V brakes front and rear.
Here’s the spec list:
- 24v 8Ah Li-Ion Batteries
- 180W brushless with 1:1 pedal assist (PAS)
- Shimano 6-speed SiS Derailleur (grip shift)
- 20 mile range, 40 miles PAS
- 16mph top speed unassisted
- 26″ wheels
- 210 pound max load capacity
Cargo rack, fenders (front-rear), and a front basket are all included as are reflectors and other gear. The VoltRider has a 2 year warranty on the frame, a 1 year warranty on all other parts except the battery and consumables (bulbs, plastics), 6 month warranty on battery.
