It’s not cheap at $500,000, but the battery swap station can swap out a dead battery on an EV in less time than it takes to pump a tank of gas, Better Place claims. This first prototype was unveiled in Japan a few days ago and is what Better Place hopes will be the first of thousands across the globe.
The company’s plans are ambitious. With 17 EV charging stations in Israel already, Better Place plans to have a total of 150,000 of them in Israel by 2011 along with 150 of these battery swap stations. Then comes Denmark, Australia, California, Hawaii, and all the others where Better Place has made agreements and headway.
Should be interesting to watch. The company has definitely accomplished a lot in only 19 months of operation so far. Here’s the video:

Hawaii has endorsed a deal with Better Place, which puts together electrical charging infrastructures for EV use. This follows a deal with California and Oregon and will be the first of the state-wide setups to be completed.
