We first caught sight of this electric bus back in February. At that time, the Proterra was cruising through California hoping to get some interest from public officials. Burbank took the bait and is trying them, by the way.
The Golden, Colorado company that makes the bus, then took it up to Altoona, Pennsylvania. There, the bus underwent some economy tests at the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State. They put the bus through a rigorous testing regimen designed to simulate it in various everyday public transport roles.
The bus was fully loaded (36,680 gross vehicle weight) to simulate a full complement of passengers (72) and came out with impressive numbers. The best results was 29.23mpg equivalent, the worst was 17.55mpg(e) and the average was 20mpg(e).
According to Proterra’s president Jeff Granato, that’s 400% better performance than the conventional diesel equivalent to this bus. It’s also markedly better than the hybrid models.
While the bus has a range of only 35-40 miles per charge, it can be fast-charged to full in only ten minutes. Basically, drivers culd plug it in during breaks and “fill er up.”
