A123 Systems developed the Hymotion L5 plug-in conversion kit to convert a Prius (2nd generation) into a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Foreign Affairs Auto of West Palm Beach, Florida has been announced as an official installer of the kits–the 12th shop to gain that recognition from A123.
The kits transform the older Prius models into PHEVs with a 100mpg possible efficiency. The kits are $10,395 (plus installation, which is not too complicated). The Hymotion is meant to install as a one piece unit, under the cargo floor of the Prius. Since the motor and other components aren’t replaced, the car is still pretty limited in speed and capability while all-electric.
It does give the car an all-electric capability and boosts the average driver’s car to 50-60mpg average. The price of the conversion is dubious, but A123 has worked it out with Toyota so that if you add one of these at an authorized installer, like Foreign Affairs Auto, it will not void your vehicle warranty.
