When I wrote about this concept, used as a training exercise for 150 of Mercedes’ up-and-comers, I ended the article with “Really cool, even if it will never actually exist.” Well, I’m eating crow now because the F-Cell Roadster does exist as a prototype and recently went on a tour through Germany on the route that Daimler’s original Bertha Benz drove in 1888.

This is awesome. Sure, the car doesn’t break any records or have a big-time CEO like Elon Musk behind it, but it’s one of the coolest-looking machines I’ve seen. It’s fly-by-wire steering combined with the extremely old-time styling make it just awesome.
The F-Cell drove from Mannheim to Weisloch, stopping at the same chemist’s shop that the Bertha Benz used to refuel in 1888. How cool is that?
