Top Prototype at Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Gets 2,757.1mpg!
At this year’s Shell Eco-Marathon Americas, the winning prototype won with an astounding 2,757.1 miles per gallon. Want to know something even more amazing? That’s not a world record for the event…
This year, 40 teams and 500 people competed to go the furthest distance on a set amount of fuel. The winner this year was the Alerion Supermileage team from Laval University (Quebec, Canada). They took home the $5,000 grand prize with the NTF 3.0. That was in the Combustion Engine category.
Other winners include:
- Penn State University’s team from University Park, PA achieved 1,912.9mpg with their Blood, Sweat and Gears Vehicle in the Fuel-Cell/Hydrogen category.
- The Purdue Solar Racing Team from Purdue University got 4,913mpg in their solar-powered Pulsar in the Solar Power category.
- Last year’s big winners in the UrbanConcept Combustion Engine category, Mater Dei High SChool in Evansville, IN won grand prize for Combustion Engine in their Street Buggy that gets 433.3mpg. This team’s vehicle in the Conbustion Engine category still holds the record at 2,843mpg.

Several other special awards and prizes were given out. In all, this looks like it was a cool event and it’s held every year. Teams compete in various categories for prizes for vehicle performance, safety, design, innovation, and more. Teams from around the globe, including one from India this year, come to take part in the competition. Most are high school and university sponsored.
