Chrysler unveiled the first four of an eventual 250 battery-powered electric minivans for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The vans are based on the automaker’s Town & Country EV that was shown off late last year in LA. Because they are meant for Post Office duty routes (which are relatively short range), they are being built without the accompanying range-extending motor, so they’ll be all-electric rather than plug-in hybrids.
The vans are otherwise identical to their Town & Country cousins and are using the A123 li-ion batteries and the same motors. This battery-only version of the van will be available as a fleet vehicle to other customers as well, once the USPS models have been delivered.
The Post Office is purchasing both right- and left-hand versions (roughly 1/2 and 1/2) to service routes depending on need. They will mainly be used for route delivery in cities and suburbs where current postal vehicles only drive an average of 20 miles per day.
