The 2010 Prius officially goes on sale in mid-May in Japan. They expect to have pre-orders of over 40,000 units by then and have already accepted more than 20,000 with more pouring in.
While the numbers are probably a little optimistic, they are better than the Honda Insight’s 18,000 in its first month. Honda, however, beat their expected sales by 3.6 times and had to ramp up production to keep up. I think the difference between the two companies is a matter of marketing. Let’s face it, Toyota has learned to be a little more “American” with their marketing hype than Honda has.
The real winner here, though, are the consumers. Both cars at at roughly the same low price point, starting at around $21,000 base. With their ultra-efficient hybrid driving and economy, these are definitely the cars to beat in today’s hybrid vehicles market.
Toyota’s goal is to sell 400,000 Prius world wide in 2010.
