As the hybrid war between Honda and Toyota commences, Honda has taken it up a notch by offering a sporty hybrid concept, the CRZ. Based on current CRZ design, the new 2011 version will have better body styling for minimizing drag as well as a higher-horsepower engine than the Insight.
The CRZ design was first unveiled as a concept model in 2007, based on the popular (but discontinued) CRX 2-door coupe. Originally, the CRZ was to be a gasoline-powered car, but Honda has since dropped that in favor of hybrid power.

The CRZ will have a 1.8L Civic engine (140hp), but will otherwise use the Insight’s hybrid power train. This horsepower jump from the Insight’s 98hp is interesting and will likely have a significant final telling on the car’s EPA ratings.
This is a coupe, however, not just a high-efficiency sedan. The total vehicle weight will be around 2,800 pounds and the car will also feature an optional manual transmission.
The body design is distinctly wedge-shaped, sort of the modern equivalent of the popular 1980s high-end sports cars (ala Magnum PI). I think the looks are definitely a step up from both the Prius and the Insight’s efficient, but homely appearance.

The specs will probably change before production begins in 2011, but prototype models will probably begin popping up at auto shows late this year or in early 2010. Can’t wait!
