Recognizing Honda’s Insight as a real challenge to the Prius’ reign on the hybrid market, Toyota has announced that they’re cutting the base price of the 2010 Prius down to $21,000 (about $1,200 higher than the Insight).
In Japan, meanwhile, Toyota is still producing the 2009 model and pricing it equal to the Insight in order to compete. They considered doing this in the U.S., but it wasn’t financially feasable. While the two cars aren’t really in the same class–the Prius being a higher-end model–the Insight is definitely poised to cause some serious havoc with Toyota’s market share. The two vehicles have very similar real-world mileage numbers.
