ElectraFlyer-C All-Electric Mini Plane “Cheaper Than Driving”

[Updated April 27, 2009]
The ElectraFlyer C is an electric ultralight plane is a kit craft conversion. It has a flight range of about 2 hours and debuted at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh.
The pilots describe the flyer as extremely maneuverable and very hard to get used to because of its near total silence in the air. “Enjoy the scenery and the sensation of flying,” says one, “because you won’t be hearing a lot of engine noise out of it.”
The ElectraFlyer is a conversion plane from Electric Aircraft Corporation that is designed as a basic one-man glider with an ultra-quiet electric motor and propeller. It’s range depends on battery pack options–the largest pack the company sells has a 2 hour flight time from takeoff to landing. After-market packs could be added.
The plane is capable of a 500-600 feet per minute climb, a 70mph cruising speed and a top speed of just a little more than that (144km/h). In total, with the cost of the battery pack, it’s expected life cycle, and average charge costs, that means flight costs of about $6.20/hour. Compare that to a standard aircraft or even your car!
The company also makes an ultralight with an electric motor. Visit ElectraFlyer.com for more information and to see videos of the craft in action!
