The BYD Dual Mode (aka range-extended hybrid) PHEV is not the sales phenomenon BYD had hoped for. Reports from China say that the F3DM launched in December and has so far sold only 80 units. Not good for the up-start carmaker.
Part of the problem might be their limiting the initial sales to fleets only as well as early fears of battery performance and reliability. The car’s price is $22,000(USD) and some fleets who purchased initial units are rescinding orders for more.
The F3DM’s sister car, the F3 gasoline-only version, is reportedly selling very well to everyday Chinese citizens, having sold nearly 21,000 units in March alone.
The company plans to lower the price of the F3DM to about $16,000USD when they begin producing them in larger numbers. China’s lack of EV charging stations might also be contributing to the car’s lackluster sales, though the car is capable of recharging itself.
