The Obama Administration plans to send another $285 million in funding to Detroit to purchase 17,600 new vehicles from the Big 3 before June 1st. The loose requirements for these “green” vehicles is that they manage to get at least 10% improvements in overall fuel efficiency from their counterparts.
The first set of these is for 2,500 hybrid sedans to be finished on Tax Day (April 15). No word on how the orders are to be broken up, but so far, Ford is the only one offering an extremely efficient hybrid sedan made in Detroit (Fusion). Chrysler has none to offer at all and GM only has the Saturan Aura or Malibu hybrids, neither of which are close to the Fusion in mpg ratings.
The White House press statement includes a lot of feel good information, but little real substance on the purchase program. It feels good, at least…

Chrysler has released their new 5-year plan to get back in the black. While the plan talks about better fuel efficiency and more targeted, focused vehicle models within brands, it says absolutely nothing about electrics or hybrids.
