The Aptera 2e underwent the first in its series of crash tests for federal motor vehicle highway safety and exploded on impact this morning. Engineers say that they’ve never seen anything like it. “It went up in a huge fireball like it was full of jet fuel or something,” Mort Vladinsky, one of the engineers, said to the press.
No one is sure what happened, since the 3-wheeled car is all-electric and has no fuel on board. Sources say that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) is on the scene testing the debris for clues.
When asked how the crash occurred and what the test criteria were, Vladinsky stated that the standard 30mph frontal crash test involved two dummies and then broke down crying, lamenting the loss of his two friends Crashy and Smashy, the dummies incinerated in the blast.
An Aptera spokesman, at a press conference today, said that the company is sure that this little mishap will not be a roadblock towards the 2e back winning it’s safety award. “One freak accident,” he said, “is no reason to discount the incredible safety potential of this automobile.”
