Optare PLC, a UK-based company, has just announced their new Solo EV battery electric bus. The Solo EV electric bus comes in several sizes, and is a new addition to their already-existing Solo line of buses.
The Solo EV is powered by an AC Induction motor rated at 120 kW and powered by two banks of lithium ion phosphate batteries with a capacity of 80kwh at 307 volts. The Solo EV has an electronically-limited top speed of 56 mph and while no range was stated, given the specs it can be assumed to be less than 100 miles.
The Solo EV features a regenerative braking system which uses an electronic control mechanism to simulate diesel engine braking when the operator releases the vehicle’s throttle. Usage of the brake pedal further engages the regen graking system until maximum, at which point standard service brakes kick in. This recovers up to 60 kW of energy back into the batteries during deceleration.
The Solo EV is available now for purchase in the U.K.
