Toyota has lowered the price of a Prius to match the current price of the Honda Insight in Japan. The move was expected, but still surprising. The Prius’ price is now down to $19,250 USD. This is the current 2009 model, however, and no announcements have been made for the 2010 model.
With the Insight selling so well in Japan and about to hit the streets of America, speculation over whether this same price matching will happen here is rising. Given today’s market for auto sales, it probably wouldn’t be surprising. Especially with all of the 2009 models sitting in ship yards, parking facilities, and crowding dealership floors.
There is also a rumor that Toyota is working on a “dumbed-down” hybrid model that will be based on the Prius, but built much cheaper. Industry speculators believe that model will stay in Japan and possibly expand to Asia, but not to the U.S.
