Keeping things on the continent, Fisker Automotive has signed a battery deal with Vancouver-based Advanced Lithium Power, Inc. The deal has two aspects: thousands of lithium-ion batteries for the Karma and a sizeable cash stake in the Canadian company.
As reported earlier, Fisker had announced that they were solidifying their supply chain by purchasing a chunk of a battery supply company, but had not named the company at that time. Advanced Lithium Power was what most rumor-mill pundits had figured would be Fisker’s pick and that’s now been confirmed.
Russel Datz of Fisker told the LA Times that Fisker would gain two seats on the Board of Directors of the Canadian firm as part of this deal. The relationship, before the deal was penned, was already existing as Quantum, the makers of the Karma’s PHEV system, had already been working with Advanced Lithium Power on Ford Escape PHEV conversions.
This is good news for Fisker and for the industry in general, since not only does this mean the battery supply stays local (simplifying the logistics for Fisker, no doubt), but it also makes sure that the Karma can stay in production. Maybe Fisker will get lucky and have a chance to buy up the production facilities for the GM engine they’re using when GM finally gives up and declares bankruptcy.
