Eleanor, the Solar Race Car built by students at MIT, will be participating in the World Solar Challenge in Australia this coming October.
The seven day, two thousand mile race will feature some of the world’s most efficient solar vehicles, including Eleanor, which is capable of speeds up to 90 miles per hour. Eleanor is the 10th solar car to be built by MIT for racing since 1987, when the Sunraycer first debuted.

Eleanor, the latest from the team, has six square meters of solar panels from cells made by Sun Power, Inc. and a power generation capacity of 1,200 watts. 693 lithium-ion cells make up a 6kWh battery pack and a 10hp electric motor provides the propulsion. The entire car weighs less than 500 pounds.
Average speeds will be around 55mph in Eleanor, but she is capable of 90mph thanks to superior aerodynamics and advanced solar tech.
Good luck, team!
