A little while ago, we did a feature on a self-balancing, electric unicycle. That might possibly be the ultimate LEV, and now, you can download complete plans to build your own for about $1500 in purchased parts.
Trevor Blackwell, who designed this idea after figuring out how to build his own Segway, thought that maybe two wheels were redundant and he’d prefer to sit down anyway, so the DIY self-balancing unicycle was born.
The most expensive components are the gearbox (Whyachi TWM3M, $345), followed by the NiMH cells and Magmotor ($218, $299 respectively). The rest of the parts are mostly small, sub-$100 bits.
Trevor has complete software downloads for the controllers, mechanical fabrication drawings and electrical schematics as well.
Check out Trevor’s site for all of his cool DIY EV projects! Awesome!
