Nissan Prototype EV
In November last year, Renault-Nissan and Sonoma County, California announced a partnership to promote the adoption of EVs and an EV charging infrastructure in the county. The county has an aggressive plan to have 1,000 EVs on the road by next year.
In May, the verdict on whether Sonoma County will get $3 million in grants from California and the US DOE to build electric charging stations for electric vehicles will be in. Meanwhile, Nissan has been giving pointers to local governments in the county on where those charge points should be.
Obvious choices such as shopping malls, workplace parking areas, and the businesses frequented by green-conscious people are targets.
The hindrance here appears to be California’s budget freeze, which will likely curtail a lot of grant spending until the state can figure out how to balance its checkbook.
My wonder is why Nissan or another private company isn’t just coughing up the money to do this themselves. Why are taxpayer dollars needed for something like this?
