Hino Motors, Ltd., a large-vehicle subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, will be introducing a hybrid truck in Japan, the USA, and Australia in 2010. These trucks will see about 2.5 times better fuel economy than current, comparable (conventional) models.
These new hybrid trucks will be using high-capacity batteries and an improved motor, which nearly doubles even Hino’s current hybrid models. Those models were first introduced in 2003/04. The new hybrids will sell for about $5,500USD more than their conventional counterparts, making up for this in both tax incentives and lower fuel costs over time.
Hino, of course, shares hybrid technology with Toyota and much of the new improvements are due to information from current hybrid trucks as well as the Prius.
Hino is the leading heavy truck manufacturer in Japan and is the fastest-growing truck maker in the U.S. and most of the world.
Other traditional big-rig makers, such as Case International, are also building hybrid models. Wal-Mart will be testing thirty of those this year as a part of their Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club distribution fleet.
