Suzuki Crosscage: The Awesome Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorcycle

It’s been quite a week so far when it comes to electric motorcycle news. First, we featured the two students who just built themselves a hydrogen fuel-cell motorcycle, and then we covered the unveiling of the Mission One electric motorcycle. Not wanting to buck the trend, we figured we’d feature another electric motorcycle - one that was announced some time ago in Tokyo - Suzuki’s Crosscage Hydrogen fuel-cell motorcycle.

The Suzuki Crosscage was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2007, and since then very little information has been released about this innovative and awesome-looking electric bike. The bike is obviously out of concept and into prototype phase, as evidenced by these photos, taken sometime in mid-2008.
The Crosscage has uses an innovative body and engine design and is powered by an air-cooled fuel cell developed by British company Intelligent Energy. The bulk of the bike’s body is taken up by the hydrogen fuel tank and lithium-ion battery pack, which stores energy generated by the fuel cell for on-demand use. The bike can travel about 125 miles (200km) per tank of hydrogen. However, we can’t find any information as to whether the hydrogen will be stored in compressed form or through some chemical method.

The bike’s motor is mounted directly on the rear wheel hub, so while this motorcycle looks like it’ll fly, chances are it won’t really be going that fast. The engine’s power output equivalent is stated as 125cc’s, so top speed is likely to be around 50-60 mph.
No word yet as to the bike’s release date, but we’re certainly looking forward to finding out more about it. Until then, here are a few images and a video for you to check out:
