Study Concludes the Obvious: Smaller PHEVs Minimize Fuel Consumption, Emissions

A team from Carnegie Mellon University has analyzed plug-in hybrid (PHEV) fuel consumption, cost, and emissions over a range of charging frequencies (distance between charges). The study will be fully published in an upcoming issue of Energy Policy.

Bill Clinton DENIED A Tesla Test Drive!

On President’s Day, former President Bill Clinton attended a luncheon in Burbank, California at an aircraft hangar to be the first given a LEED platinum rating. In that hangar was a Tesla Roadster.

GM, The Volt, and Bankruptcy

Two recent pieces of information do a lot to undermine General Motor’s public face of “struggling, but in there” Rocky Balboa facade. The first are the huge losses the company posted for last year, which marks gigantic losses for four years in a row for GM. The second is a recent study on the price point of the upcoming Volt.

Fisker Starts Taking Pre-Orders on the Karma S

Fisker has announced that they are now taking pre-orders on the Karma-S hard-top convertible, due to hit the streets in 2011 and debuting in street-ready prototype form at the Detroit Auto Show next January (2009).
The Electric Car Stimulus Plan

Obama’s “stimulus” package (I’ll try not to get political here) includes some pretty decent tax breaks for purchasing alternative-fueled vehicles. In the big picture, the credits were originally set for a total of 250,000 vehicles, but have now expanded to 200,000 vehicles PER MANUFACTURER. That’s a big jump and one that could pump up vehicle sales.

Electric Buses Coming Soon to a Road Near You

Public transportation doesn’t get much in the way of headlines unless it involves sexy “bullet trains” or gripes about long waits for buses. Well, all-electric buses are now on the market, with two being announced this month.
Chinese Electric Cars Coming to America

Shandong Baoya Vehicle Co. of China has announced that they have received 4,800 electric car orders originating in the U.S. and have already sent 500 cars as of January.

GM Plans It’s Volt-ific Future: 2 New PHEVs

General Motors currently has six hybrid electric vehicles and the much-anticipated Chevrolet Volt will hit the streets late next year. Based on the Volt’s powertrain (assuming it sells well, I’d imagine), GM will be introducing at least four more vehicles using the plug-in hybrid technology by 2012.
