Chinese plug-in hybrid maker BYD, maker of the recently-released F3DM Hybrid currently on sale in China, is reportedly considering leasing it’s technology to other car makers. Citing a report in China Knowledge Press, analysts at Global Insight have said that unnamed sources say that companies in the U.S., Europe and Japan have shown interest.
Licensing BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology, including batteries and drive-train, would enable smaller car companies to develop new products cheaper and release them faster than if they had to develop their own technology, and that’s a good thing for consumers.
However, such an arrangement could be a double-edged sword, as those car companies would then be dependent on a foreign company and imported technology in order to operate.
If used as a stopgap while proprietary technologies are being developed, though, deals such as BYD is considering could help small, independent automakers become competitive with giants such as Toyota in a market that demands the kind of fuel-efficiency and clean emissions that electric-drive automobiles can provide.
