I’ll admit, I love instructables.com. I spend a lot of time there looking at all kinds of things. I even got my workbench plans there, as well as plans for a new chicken coop, and now: plans for a new bike to motorbike conversion. And by motor, of course, I mean electric motor.
This project is just cool. The people who wrote the project up, a father and son duo calling themselves “Radioactive Legos” from Redwood, California, go through the process step-by-step. Starting with a very nice bike as the platform: the Felt Beach Cruiser.
By modifying the sprockets and chain to accommodate higher torque and reduce slippage, they were off to a good start. Updating to disc brakes, adding a Briggs and Stratton electric motor and Alltrax programmable controller, their system was nearly complete. Batteries, a few details, and some wrench work and it’s done.
The bike was about $2400 in total cost to convert and looks really good compared to a lot of home conversion builds. While they haven’t tested it to high speeds, they estimate that it will go up to 50mph. The dynamic controller for the motor and batteries allows for full control over the throttle.
