First ChargePoint Public EV Charging Stations Open in San Jose, CA

Coulomb ChargePoint

Coulomb, which makes ChargePoint electric vehicle charging stations, has launched its first set of stations in its San Jose, California network. Called “Smartlets,” these parking meter-like poles allow EV owners to park, plug in, and re-charge their vehicles.  We covered these Smartlets not too long ago.

Subscriptions to the service require a $9.95 processing fee to set up, but are otherwise free. The service includes a “charge card” which is used to activate the SmartPoints and charge your vehicle.  You are billed for what you use.  Coulomb plans to expand this service to include several charging plans, similar to the way cell phone packages work.

Three ChargePoint Smartlets are near the San Jose State University campus. The mychargepoint.net website allows users to find Smartlets in their area and will even tell them whether they are currently occupied.

Coulomb is in negotiations with other cities and places of business and is expanding their network throughout the West Coast of the United States.
