Chrysler Pulls a Rabbit Out of Its Hat at the Detroit Auto Show: The 200C PHEV Concept

It was a surprise to everyone but the Executive VP of Product Development of Chrysler, who showed off the new PHEV. This is a realistic, sell-able concept car that Chrysler is showing off as the future of their “Project D” line (green vehicles).
Flush with new government money, Chrysler showcased several concepts for various vehicles, but this one was the only surprise of the bunch. The 200C is reportedly, given the model number, based on or a replacement for the 300C, but looks a lot like the Sebring, which has seen struggling sales lately.

If this car ever does make it to market and doesn’t just get showcased as Chrysler’s latest “we’re trying to be green” attempt, it’s a great car. Here’s some tantalizing numbers:
- 40 mile all-electric range
- 400 mile hybrid range (full battery, full tank)
- Top speed of 120mph+
- Contemporary design and all the interior amenities (sound, comfort, etc.)
- ENVI Range-extension

The car promises to be a “connectivity portal” to the world, with built-in iPod docking, touch-screen (in-dash) for control of devices (no switches or levers for A/C or radio), and a stow-able tablet PC for the passenger. Among other things. This is Chrysler’s concept for all their future vehicles, which they’re calling the “new Chrysler DNA.”
The 200C is a performance sedan based on a rear-wheel drive platform, though that could change to front-wheel in the future. The body of the car is more “swept” and less bulky than most Chrysler designs, adding to its aerodynamics and sleek looks.

The specs are as follows:
- 4-passenger sedan
- Motor peak: 200Kw / 268hp
- Regenerative braking
- Lithium-ion batteries
- Gasoline generator: 55kW / 74hp continuous
- 0-60 in 7 seconds
- Standing quarter-mile: 14 seconds
