Inspired by the self-balancing Unicycle created by Trevor Blackwell, this experimenter set out to build a one-wheeled skateboard. Utilizing the information abundantly available online regarding balancing robots, and some ingenuity, John Dingley worked to make his self-balancing board a reality.
The final product (or current version, if you prefer) features one fat wheel at the center of the board around which the rider’s feet straddle. Once the rider tilts the board to level (by putting weight on it), the self-balancing gyroscopes kick in. Then, it’s off to the races.
Direction control is by axis, so tilting forward moves that way, backwards slows down or goes backward, and side-to-side is like any skateboard. A wired thumb controller determines speed.
