The province of Ontario in Canada is the most populous province in the country and is finally following B.C. And Quebec in permitting low-speed vehicles (LSVs) on public roads. Canada’s LSV class is similar to the U.S. “NEV” (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) class recognized in most states.
A recent study published in November raised several safety concerns regarding LSVs and how they are operated in Canada. Based on that study, safety standards and rules have been adopted. Additional measures will include:
- Daytime running lights
- A vehicle maximum speed notice visible from exterior of vehicle
- Slow moving vehicle sign (triangles)
- 3 warning devices: horn, proximity warning sytem, and backup warning systems
- Defrost and heat systems
- 3-point seat belts
- Warning disclaimer to be signed at vehicle purchase
- New drivers not allowed to operate them (G class or better)
- No infants or children in vehicle
- Right-lane only unless making a left turn
These are just a few. How nice of them to allow left turns. It seems that either they are really, really uninterested in having these vehicles on the road or they are way overbearing with their thoughts on how they can operate. If all else fails, you can always count on government to screw it up.
