Mazda’s KAAN Electric Racer Wins Design Award

The KAAN, a race car design from Mazda, looks like a combination of a speed boat and a Klingon vessel from Star Trek (with wheels). It’s name is definitely right out of Sci-Fi. Not sure about those yellow tires either. Could be a stealth device.
At any rate, as goofy as it sounds, this car actually looks kind of cool. I don’t expect any of us will ever be driving one, but it could actually find its way to a race track.
The Motor Sports 2025 design competition at the LA Auto Show in November had some pretty outlandish concepts. Like the rocket-with-wheels look of the BMW Salt Flat Racer and the enclosed ATV/buggy hybrid from VW dubbed the Bio Runner.

Mazda’s (Wrath of?) KAAN took the prize, though. It’s an all-electric 4-wheeler, though the two rear wheels are set up as a dually, so it looks like a 3-wheeler) with a cat’s prowler stance. The concept car is theorized to have a 250mph top speed and would require a futuristic “electric-conductive polymer sub-level” to power the electric race cars of the future.
The sci-fi concepts in the show are fun and interesting, though probably not entirely realistic. But, hey, artists have to have somewhere to showcase their pretty pictures and the ones who really like to draw cars have very few places to display them. Right? That’s what concept design shows are all about.
And since I brought up Star Trek, I guess I’m obligated to say “Beam me up, Scotty,” as the ubiquitous Priceline Negotiator would say.
