The Wrightspeed X1 Electric Race Car

Those with a true need for speed know that there are only so many things you can do with a car that just isn’t made to go fast. The folks at Wrightspeed think that internal combustion motors are a detriment to true speed. So they eliminated them from their design and went electric with the Wrightspeed X1 electric race car.
It’s a race design created by Ian Wright and the car looks like an Indy car. But it sure doesn’t sound like one. Listen to the rubber hit the asphalt…and the birds sing. Dog barking? Check. Kid whining that he dropped his ice cream? Yep. Nitro-burning funny car engine noise? Nope. It’s electric, baby! No laughing gas in this flyer.
Excited yet? Alright, let me give you some impressive numbers, which I’ve checked twice for typos so they’re legit:
- 0-60 in 3 seconds (THREE, count ‘em)
- Standing quarter mile in 11.5 seconds
- 3-phase A/C Induction Motor: 236 horsepower
So…fast? Check!

The X1 is a race car, but it’s also a prototype for Wrightspeed, which has $8M in funding with which it plans to convert what it’s learned into a street-worthy car for the market. The Silicon Valley-based firm has plans to turn this racing dream into a consumer-available reality with a 100 mile-per-charge range and a 4.5 hour charging period. The current X1 model charges in a quick 1.25 hours on 220v, so a four hour 110v time is not out of the question.
The Indy 500 may have a new race coming soon… Maybe the EV 500?
Here’s a fun video of the Wrightspeed X1 beating both a Ferrari and a Porsche on the track:
