Well, at least on-base they will. The Army announced today that it will be fielding 4,000 electric vehicles over the next three years with a projected goal of 10,000 in total between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The low-speed electric vehicles will be used as on-base commuters at military bases around the world, starting with Fort Belvoir in Virginia on December 15 th.
The initiative is to utilize these small battery-powered vehicles to move around bases for the various activities that take place there, such as message and small equipment delivery, small group transport, and so forth. The military estimates that this will save them about 11.5 million gallons of fuel per year, amounting to a significant cost cut.
The vehicles will be supplied initially by Native American Biofuels Incorporated, a large defense contractor which owns E-Z-Go which also supplies golf carts and other electrics to military, government, and other groups. It’s doubtful that NABI will be the sole supplier, but they are supplying the first 400 units, the first of which will be in Virginia before Christmas.
The vehicles will sport a new Army decal which says “Army Green, Army Strong.”
