The TTXGP: World’s First Clean Emissions Grand Prix

TTX01 Electric Superbike

The TTX01 Electric Superbike, built by TTXGP organizers.

Over fifty registered teams (thus far) from thirteen different countries will converge on the Isle of Man to traverse the infamous mountain circuit for the TTXGP, the world’s first clean emissions Grand Prix. These forty miles of country roads will be inundated with quiet, clean, emissions-free competition vehicles (no promises on the competitors themselves) for the first TTXGP (Time Trials eXtreme Grand Prix).

The event will be held in June of 2009 and aims to prove that “being green does not mean being slow.” Another, “open class” race for cottage teams (teams with no official corporate or university backing) will be held, in which teams will compete under strict rules with set budgets and off-the-shelf materials. All races will be held alongside the famous Isle of Man TT races that take place on the island every year. One of the entrants looks to be the Brammo Enertia from Oregon.

The rules allow for a wide range of power sources and drive options, including internal combustion without carbon-based fuels, hydrogen, etc. Both wheels on the motorcycle can be powered as well, with no limits as to where and how the rider sits on the vehicle—so long as there is a rider. So far, most entrants are reported to be electric-drive. Full rules are available on their website.

This will likely prove to be a great event, with professional racers on alternative-energy machines racing on a harsh and real race course, known world-wide as a very advanced race circuit. Wonder if there’ll be an entrant running on Guinness?
