Bamgoo: The Bamboo Electric Car

Researchers at the Kyoto University in Japan have built a car whose body is made entirely of bamboo. The car, which is a 1-seater electric, is called the BamGoo. It weighs in at only 60kg (about 133 pounds) and will run for 30 miles on a single charge.
Why bamboo, you might ask? I asked that too. Turns out that since bamboo is the fastest-growing eco-material that’s hard enough to make useful items out of (people have known this for centuries) and since it’s very lightweight, it was a natural. Lightweight, eco-friendly materials are a great basis for an efficient, electric car. Right?

OK, so this car will probably never be seen on the road. With good reason. Whack it with a baseball bat and you’ll do major structural damage to it. Still, it’s a fun concept and an even funnier experiment that got good old KU some publicity.
No smoking, please.
