In what is yet another example of human ingenuity, a 17 year teenager from Texas has completed his summer project - building an electric car - and a awesome-looking one at that - on a $10,000 budget.
Texas teenager Lucas Laborde’s electric car is based on a Bradley GT II kit car which his father bought him on eBay for only $5,000. The electric motor, controller, and batteries required for the conversion cost another $5,700. The project took Lucas over 150 hours to complete.
The car itself is capable of traveling 40 miles per charge, plenty for Lucas’ daily drive to school and back, and has a top speed of about 45 mph and because it’s electric, it’s got a ton of low-end torque.
The home-built EV does have a few quirks; the weight of the batteries has caused the fiberglass body to twist slightly causing the gull-wing doors on the car to not entirely close properly. But given that this vehicle was built by a 17 year old on a shoestring budget, we think it’s an impressive achievement.
